Myopathies: Muscle Diseases and Rehabilitation

Learn about the causes of muscle weakness in myopathies, the assessment process, the management of fatigue and individually tailored rehabilitation.

Updated: · General information

What is it?

Myopathy covers a range of different diseases affecting muscle tissue. There are inherited and acquired forms. The cause of the muscle weakness is investigated through neurological assessment.

    How is it assessed?

Difficulty with walking, stairs and getting up from a seated position is assessed. Muscle strength, fatigue, joint movement and any respiratory symptoms are considered together.

      How is rehabilitation planned?

Exercise load and rest intervals are adjusted to the type of disease. Instead of standard programmes that cause excessive fatigue, an individual plan is followed that preserves movement and daily function.

How is the source of muscle weakness investigated?

Myopathy is a term covering a range of muscle diseases. Difficulty rising from a chair, climbing stairs or raising the arms may be present. The age at onset, family history, medication and the distribution of weakness are all important. In the neurological assessment, blood tests, EMG, genetic studies or other investigations are selected according to clinical need.

How are exercise and energy use planned?

The programme is arranged according to the type of disease and any cardiac or respiratory involvement. Breaking daily tasks up with rest periods, considering suitable assistive equipment and monitoring excessive fatigue can all help. Marked loss of strength persisting for a long period after exercise calls for the programme to be reviewed; a standard list of intensive exercises is not suitable for everyone.

            Your questions

            Patient information

Is every muscle pain a myopathy?

No. Muscle pain can arise from many different causes. A diagnosis of myopathy is made through examination and, where needed, disease-specific investigations.

Does rehabilitation cure a genetic disease?

No. The aim is to support existing abilities, reduce restriction of movement and preserve participation in daily life. Medical follow-up for the disease itself continues.
