The internal medicine consultation: assessment of symptoms, follow-up of chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, and the plan for investigations and review.
Updated: · General information
Internal Medicine: what approach is taken?
In our internal medicine clinic within FizyoCare Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Medical Centre, the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of complaints relating to the internal organs in people aged over 15 are conducted with care under the leadership of Dr Alaattin Sever Aydın, specialist physician. Working in an integrated way with our centre’s fully equipped laboratory and advanced diagnostic facilities, the unit provides comprehensive care in hypertension, diabetes, thyroid, respiratory, digestive and renal disease.
Areas of assessment and treatment
- Hypertension and cardiovascular risk assessment
- Diabetes and metabolic follow-up
- Thyroid and endocrine screening
- Disorders of the stomach, bowel, liver and digestive system
- Follow-up of kidney and urinary tract infections
- Comprehensive biochemistry and microbiology laboratory testing
How can you prepare for the consultation?
Note when your symptoms began, all the medicines and supplements you take, and your previous results. Any records of blood pressure or blood glucose measured at home may be brought along. Whether fasting is required before a test depends on the test requested and should be checked; it is not necessary to come fasting to every consultation.
Investigations and follow-up are planned together
Tests are chosen according to the history and the examination; performing a large number of tests does not in itself amount to a better assessment. In chronic disease, the targets, tolerance of medication and the person’s circumstances are reviewed. Where needed, an opinion from another specialty is requested; when and how the results will be discussed is made clear.
What is assessed at the first consultation?
Your medical history, your current symptoms, the medicines you take and your needs in daily life are all discussed. You may share any previous investigations you have. Suitable options are considered together after the physician’s assessment.
Your questions
Patient information
Can hypertension or diabetes be diagnosed from a single high reading?
The diagnosis is assessed together with the conditions of measurement, the symptoms and the necessary confirmatory tests. Results should not be interpreted in isolation without a physician’s opinion.
Is an internal medicine assessment needed before physical therapy?
It is not compulsory for everyone. It may be arranged if it is considered necessary because of the control of accompanying illnesses or because of new symptoms.
