Traditional and Complementary Medicine Unit: what approach is taken?

In our traditional and complementary medicine (GETAT) unit, the treatment plan is determined by medical assessment. For procedures such as acupuncture, medical ozone, mesotherapy and prolotherapy, the person’s state of health, their expectations and the possible risks are considered together. Interventional pain procedures are likewise planned according to the diagnosis, medical necessity and the assessment of an authorised physician. Not every method is suitable for every patient, and none replaces necessary medical treatment and follow-up.

    Areas of assessment and treatment

    • Interventional pain procedures
    • Pain assessment and diagnosis
    • Acupuncture and dry needling
    • Medical ozone therapy and mesotherapy
    • PRP and prolotherapy
    • Intra-articular injections and nerve blocks
    • Spinal and soft-tissue injections, and injection for piriformis syndrome
    • Radiofrequency therapy
    • Medical follow-up

The impact of pain is assessed as a whole

The effect of pain on sleep, movement, mood and work matters as much as its duration and location. Previous investigations, current medication and the results of treatments already tried are reviewed. Before a new procedure is chosen, the source of the pain and the different treatment options are discussed.

What questions should be asked when choosing a method?

The purpose of the proposed treatment, the level of evidence, the alternatives and the possible harms should all be explained. The fact that a method is complementary does not mean that it is free of risk or beneficial for everyone. Follow-up assesses not only short-term relief but change in sleep and daily function; a plan that brings no benefit is reconsidered.

What is assessed at the first consultation?

Your medical history, your current symptoms, the medicines you take and your needs in daily life are all discussed. You may share any previous investigations you have. Suitable options are considered together after the physician’s assessment.

          Your questions

          Patient information

Do traditional and complementary treatments replace my current treatment?

Do not stop medication or follow-up on your own. Complementary options are considered alongside the treatments required for the diagnosis, and only after their suitability has been assessed.

How is it decided which method is best for pain?

The diagnosis, the previous response, the state of health and the person’s goals are assessed together. There is no single best method for every pain.
