Acupuncture: what approach is taken?

Acupuncture is one of the traditional and complementary medicine methods, with a history of two to three thousand years; it rests on stimulating specific points of the body by various means (needle, electrical, thermal or laser). Different forms of practice exist, such as traditional Chinese acupuncture and French auricular acupuncture. The procedure may be performed only by a physician holding an acupuncture certificate and a Ministry of Health practice licence, and only in a licensed traditional and complementary medicine centre.

    Areas of assessment and treatment

    • Traditional Chinese acupuncture and French auricular acupuncture
    • Use in painful musculoskeletal and nervous system complaints
    • Supportive use in indications such as migraine and neck and back pain
    • Performed by a certified physician at the determined session frequency

How is the expected benefit discussed?

The research findings on acupuncture vary with the complaint and the form of practice. It may be considered as a supportive option in some painful conditions; it cannot be said to treat every disease. The diagnosis, the goal and current treatments are assessed first. The number of sessions should not be accepted in advance as a fixed package for everyone.

      Safety and monitoring

A tendency to bleed, blood thinners, pregnancy and skin problems must all be reported. It is important that the procedure is performed with sterile single-use needles and on the basis of sound anatomical knowledge. Bruising or tenderness may occur; rare serious complications are also possible. The decision to continue is made by monitoring pain and change in daily function.

What is assessed at the first consultation?

Your medical history, your current symptoms, the medicines you take and your needs in daily life are all discussed. You may share any previous investigations you have. Suitable options are considered together after the physician’s assessment.

          Your questions

          Patient information

Will acupuncture allow me to stop my medication?

Changes to medication are made with the relevant physician. Starting acupuncture is not in itself a reason to discontinue necessary medical treatment.

What does it mean if there is no improvement after the first session?

The result of a single session is not decisive for everyone. If, however, no meaningful benefit is seen during follow-up, the plan and the alternatives should be discussed again.
