Foot Health: what approach is taken?

Foot symptoms may not depend on the pattern of weight bearing alone. The site of pain, the condition of the skin, joint movement and gait are all addressed. The need for an insole is determined individually.

    Areas of assessment and treatment

    • Assessment of weight bearing and gait
    • Choice of footwear
    • Referral for insoles and orthoses where needed
    • Wound monitoring in diabetes and sensory loss

    What does pressure analysis show?

Measurements of how load is distributed across the sole of the foot can support the examination. They are interpreted together with the site of pain, joint movement, the skin and the gait. A single pressure map does not explain the cause of every pain; where needed, neurological, circulatory or joint causes are investigated.

How are insole and footwear fit monitored?

When a support is recommended, its position within the shoe and the pressure it creates in everyday use are checked. If new pain or friction on the skin develops, reassessment is requested. Skin monitoring is particularly important in diabetes or loss of sensation. The aim is not merely to change the appearance of weight bearing, but to support comfortable and safe movement.

What is assessed at the first consultation?

Your medical history, your current symptoms, the medicines you take and your needs in daily life are all discussed. You may share any previous investigations you have. Suitable options are considered together after the physician’s assessment.

          Your questions

          Patient information

Does everyone need a custom insole?

No. The decision on an insole is made on the basis of the symptoms, the examination and functional need; it is not deemed necessary simply from the shape of the foot.

Which shoes should I wear to the appointment?

Bringing the everyday or sports shoes you wear most often, along with any insole you currently use, makes it easier to assess how they are being used.
