Gait and Balance Rehabilitation

Gait and Balance Rehabilitation: what approach is taken?

Symptoms affecting gait and balance can have different causes; a medical assessment is carried out first in order to determine the appropriate approach. Our centre has a gait analysis and training laboratory where walking speed, step length, foot contact time and posture are examined; this assessment can serve purposes ranging from athletic performance to the monitoring of neurological disorders. Aquatic therapy carried out in water draws on the buoyancy of water and can make movements that are difficult on land safer to perform.

    Areas of assessment and treatment

    • Gait analysis and training laboratory
    • Plantar pressure analysis
    • Balance and vertigo rehabilitation (Korebalance, Biometrics E-link)
    • Support from aquatic therapy in the pool
    • Assessment of flat foot, heel spur and toe walking
    • Referral for insoles and orthoses in disorders of weight bearing
    • Training in correct walking technique and posture

Which aspects of gait are examined?

Alongside step length and speed, turning, stopping, negotiating obstacles and moving on different surfaces are observed. Factors such as pain, muscle strength, sensation and vision are considered together. The measurement results are related to the real difficulties the person experiences at home and outdoors.

The exercises are adapted to everyday goals

Tasks are chosen such as the step at the entrance to the home, reaching the bathroom, or walking a short distance outdoors. If an assistive device is recommended, its height, grip and use are taught. Any history of falls and near-falls is discussed at follow-up; the decision to reduce support is not based on the person simply feeling well.

What is assessed at the first consultation?

Your medical history, your current symptoms, the medicines you take and your needs in daily life are all discussed. You may share any previous investigations you have. Suitable options are considered together after the physician’s assessment.

          Your questions

          Patient information

Do balance problems always come from the inner ear?

No. The nervous system, musculoskeletal problems, vision and medication can all play a part. Investigating the cause comes before choosing a programme.

Should I attempt difficult balance exercises alone at home?

Exercises that carry a risk of falling may require supervision and safe support. It should be clearly established under what conditions the home programme is to be carried out.
