Medical Ozone Therapy

Medical ozone treatments: the method, the level of evidence, assessment of suitability, the risks and discussion of the relationship to current treatments.

Updated: · General information

Medical Ozone Therapy: what approach is taken?

Under the heading of medical ozone there are complementary methods with different routes of administration. The purpose of the proposed procedure, the level of evidence and the risks specific to the individual should be assessed during the medical consultation. Results obtained for one method cannot be generalised to all routes of administration or to all conditions. Suitability, current treatments and alternatives are considered together.

    Areas of assessment and treatment

    • Major ozone therapy (ozonation in a glass vessel)
    • Local ozone treatments (joint, tendon, muscle)
    • Minor and rectal ozone treatment options
    • Treatment licensed under the Ministry of Health’s traditional and complementary medicine regulations

The method and purpose must be clearly defined

There are different treatments under the name of ozone, and their benefits and risks are not the same. It should be explained for which complaint, by which route and with what expectation it is being recommended. Broad promises such as generally strengthening immunity or curing all diseases are no substitute for an individual medical assessment.

What is discussed before a decision is made?

Accompanying illnesses, medication and any problems experienced during previous procedures are reported. The limitations of the evidence, the alternatives and the risks associated with the procedure are addressed. The number of sessions or combinations is not chosen automatically. The decision to continue should rest on the symptom and function goals set in advance, not merely on completing a package.

What is assessed at the first consultation?

Your medical history, your current symptoms, the medicines you take and your needs in daily life are all discussed. You may share any previous investigations you have. Suitable options are considered together after the physician’s assessment.

          Your questions

          Patient information

Can ozone be used in place of standard treatment?

Necessary medication or specialist follow-up should not be abandoned. The place of the proposed procedure within the current treatment should be clarified with the relevant physician.

Is the same ozone programme suitable for everyone?

No. The route of administration and the state of health carry different risks. This page is not a recommendation of any particular method or dose.
