Radiofrequency Treatment

Radiofrequency treatments for pain: assessment of the target nerve, differences between methods, suitability, possible risks and monitoring.

Updated: · General information

Radiofrequency Treatment: what approach is taken?

In pain treatment, radiofrequency covers a range of methods directed at selected nerve structures. Techniques that create a controlled thermal lesion and pulsed radiofrequency do not have the same effects. The target nerve, the method and the expected benefit are determined by medical assessment. The procedure is not appropriate for all chronic pain; alternatives and the risks, including nerve involvement, should be discussed beforehand.

    Areas of assessment and treatment

    • Assessment in chronic pain conditions
    • Application of thermal energy to the nerve ending
    • A non-surgical pain management option
    • Discussion of suitability and risks with the physician

Which source of pain is targeted?

Radiofrequency is not applied in the same way in every case of back or joint pain. The source of the pain, the examination and previous treatments are assessed. In some procedures, the response to a diagnostic block contributes to the decision. Methods that create a thermal lesion and pulsed methods differ in both aim and effect.

How is the outcome monitored after the procedure?

Alongside a reduction in pain, movement and daily function are assessed. The procedure may not remove every underlying structural problem, and the duration of effect can vary. Infection, bleeding, changes in sensation and risks specific to the method are discussed beforehand. Unexpected loss of strength or marked deterioration requires reassessment.

What is assessed at the first consultation?

Your medical history, your current symptoms, the medicines you take and your needs in daily life are all discussed. You may share any previous investigations you have. Suitable options are considered together after the physician’s assessment.

          Your questions

          Patient information

Is radiofrequency the same as physical therapy devices?

No. The methods used in interventional pain procedures should not be regarded as the same as externally applied physical therapy devices.

Does a single procedure end the pain permanently?

A permanent result cannot be guaranteed. The duration of the response and the need for repetition vary with the individual and the method chosen.
