EXERCISE GUIDE
Neck Exercises: A Safe Start
Neck exercises: choosing movements suited to the individual, how to structure practice and how to stay safe; patient information on assessment beforehand and on follow-up.
Updated: · General information

Before you begin
If your pain began after an injury, or if you have weakness radiating into the arm or difficulty with balance, be examined before exercising. Movements and repetitions are chosen individually.
Movement through the day
Do not stay in the same position for long periods. Once it has been assessed as suitable for you, slow head turns within a pain-free range and shoulder relaxation may be practised. Do not force the neck into rotation.
Keep track of your programme
Record the movements and repetitions your physiotherapist has shown you on the tracking sheet. Stop and speak to your team if you develop new numbness, dizziness or increasing pain.
